Petrol Group Successfully Completes Installation of 85th Solar Power Plant Under Petrol Green Project, 60 New to Follow
At the end of this summer, the Petrol Group successfully installed and commissioned the 85th solar power plant as part of its strategic Petrol Green project aiming at installing solar power plants on roofs of Petrol’s service stations and other buildings. This achievement attests to Petrol’s commitment to energy self-sufficiency and its strategic objective to achieve 160 MW of installed capacity from renewable energy sources by the end of 2025. The project significantly contributes to reducing the carbon footprint and generating green energy which is also used as an EV-charging station source.
The Petrol Green project is one of the strategic steps towards generating renewable electricity. Although Petrol used to invest mostly in wind power, it now also intensively uses solar power. The project, which was started last year, was divided into three phases: 46 solar power plants were installed in the first phase, 24 in the second and 15 in the third. The project was partly EU funded, and Petrol invested EUR 3.3 million. Today, Petrol operates more than 100 solar power plants at various locations in Slovenia.
“The Petrol Group jump started the energy transition years ago when it set itself an ambitious goal to reach 160 MW of installed capacity from renewables by 2025, which represents 35% of our investments. The construction of our own facilities for the production of environmentally friendly electricity is at the heart of this transition. The Petrol Green project attests to our solid commitment to these goals and delivers several benefits – from energy self-sufficiency to the carbon footprint reduction. We use the power generated by the photovoltaic power plants to supply our service stations, energy storage batteries and e-charging stations,” said Marko Ninčević, Member of the Management Board of Petrol responsible for energy generation, energy solutions and mobility.
The total installed capacity of the 85 solar power plants is 5.2 MW, annually generating around 5.6 GWh of power. The solar power plants are installed on roofs of various service stations in Slovenia, the largest being in Zalog with a capacity of more than 400 kW. With the newly installed solar power plants, the Petrol Group has reduced CO2 emissions by approximately 2,200 tons, which is an important contribution to achieving the climate neutrality and sustainable development objectives.
Expansion of the Petrol Green Project in Slovenia and the Region
In Slovenia, 60 new solar power plants are currently in the implementation phase and will be installed in the coming months. Moreover, Petrol has been obtaining documentation for the installation of 20 solar power plants in Croatia and the first one is also already under construction in Serbia. In Bosnia and Herzegovina, we are currently analysing options to install solar power plants on service stations.
All solar power plants built under the Petrol Green project are part of Petrol’s existing renewable electricity generation portfolio which includes two wind parks, five small hydropower plants and more than 100 solar power plants. The Group also intensively develops projects in the field of geothermal energy and hydrogen production. By the end of the year, the trial run phase of tree major solar parks in Croatia (Suknovci, Vrbnik in Pliskovo) will be completed and the construction of the third wind park, Dazlina, will start soon.
