PVSmile

Turning solar energy into community power- Digitalizing Community-Integrated PV Systems for Smart, Inclusive and Grid-Ready Energy Communities. PVSmile addresses the urgent need to modernize photovoltaic systems and energy communities in line with Europe's energy transition objectives. While PV deployment continues to grow, many systems remain technically rigid, digitally fragmented and socially underutilized.

Project description

PVSmile addresses the urgent need to modernize photovoltaic systems and energy communities in line with Europe's energy transition objectives. While PV deployment continues to grow, many systems remain technically rigid, digitally fragmented and socially underutilized.
PVSmile bridges this gap by integrating digital technologies, data spaces, AI and governance innovation to enable PV systems to actively support grid stability, flexibility markets and community-driven energy services.

Through international collaboration and real-world demonstrations, PVSmile delivers scalable solutions that strengthen energy sovereignty, citizen participation and climate resilience.

PVSmile Mission

PVSmile aims to transform passive utility-scale PV components and systems into flexible, community-level assets fully integrated into energy grids. By leveraging cutting-edge ICT, AI and machine learning, Blockchain and distributed ledger technologies, smart power electronics, and inclusive governance models, the project enables a new generation of smart, sustainable, and community-driven energy solutions.

What PVSmile Delivers

  1. Smart Grid-ready Energy Communities
  2. Secure and interoperable PV-centric Energy Data Spaces
  3. Inclusive multi-level governance and citizen engagement
  4. Advanced flexibility modelling and peer-to-peer asset trading
  5. Circular and sustainable PV lifecycle management

With demonstration and replication activities across 9 countries, both EU and non-EU, PVSmile validates its solutions in real-world contexts and ensures broad transferability across different energy landscapes.

Petrol as EU Early Adopter Pilot project implementator

As part of the Slovenian pilot we will focus on smaller-scale energy communities and distributed PV assets and evaluate lightweight digital solutions for monitoring, flexibility and community coordination. Additionallly, through the pilot we aim to assess how PVSmile tools can support local energy autonomy and participation, with data security and reliability being a key evaluation criteria. The pilot should highlight adaptability to diverse community sizes.
