Another public lighting renovation project successfully completed in Serbia

Efficient and energy-saving public lighting offers many benefits, not only in terms of reducing operating costs, but also in terms of improving traffic and general safety and reducing light pollution. In Serbia, Petrol is proud to have completed the implementation of another Petrol public lighting renovation project in mid-December 2021, where, together with partners and the Serbian town of Šid, old light fixtures were replaced with new, more energy-efficient ones that have a significantly longer lifespan.

Lighting is the basic infrastructure in smart city development and is key to providing light comfort for users of public spaces, which include roads and pavements, as well as walkways, squares and other public areas. Efficient lighting also saves money in the operation of public infrastructure and helps reduce light pollution and greenhouse gas emissions. 

Petrol is proud to have completed the implementation of the public lighting renovation project in the Serbian town of Šid in mid-December, where 3,500 light fixtures were replaced as part of the renovation. Šid has entered into a 13-year public–private partnership for the energy-efficient renovation of its public lighting system with Petrol and project partner Smart Energy Investment. Petrol provided the financing for the entire investment, allowing the public partner, the town of Šid, to use its own funds for other development projects. The most significant results of the project include a reduction in emissions of more than 1,000 tonnes of CO2 per year and electricity savings of more than 70%, or 1,300 MWh per year.

Petrol is also pleased that it has been able to make a positive contribution to the environment through another partnership in the field of efficient public lighting, as such collaborations represent good practice in working together towards common environmental goals. Energy renovations of public lighting systems in the region are generating significant electricity and cost savings, while reducing CO2 emissions by over 15,000 tonnes per year, which is a significant achievement.
